Another Mom's Shoes

Sometimes laughter really IS the best medicine for the soul.  This last week was a doozy...and I mean that to be real, not to exaggerate or make you, dear reader, feel bad for me.  It just kind of knocked me off my feet.  By Friday night, I was toast.  I was frustrated with myself, my children, general circumstances, and I wanted to just turn in for the night because I wanted the week to be over.  That sounds so dramatic, but I really felt that way.
My dear husband asked if I wanted to watch a movie with him.  I hesitated.  It was tempting to think about turning 'off' my reality and turning 'on' a different one...just for an hour or so.  I said I needed to think about it.  So? While I went in the other room to unwind a minute, Brian started looking up movie options.  Hahahahaha....he knows me well.  We debated between a couple different options and landed on "Mom's Night Out."  He said, "That’s what you need, right?"  "Heh...." I responded feeling self-conscious that I was so readable, but I didn’t deny it.
I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard at a film.  It did my heart wonders just to take another mom's shoes and put them on for an hour.  However, I was also met with a stark reality at the end of the film.  Many moms in PNG can’t escape like that.  What do I do when I’m stressed?  I read a book or listen to a podcast or turn on a movie for a bit.  I 'escape' my reality and put on someone else's for a bit, but here that doesn’t work for most.  Many women can’t read, so that’s out of the question.  Podcasts are expensive because you need internet to access them and internet is not cheap in PNG nor is the signal readily available.  Movies? Electricity is unreliable at best if you have a tv and there isn’t a theater to speak of.
All of a sudden it clicked (literally and figuratively)....no wonder it MATTERS so much to sit down and tell stories with one another!  It helps everyone escape from their own realities for a bit and put on someone else's!  While that might sound simple in concept, we have been here for a year and a half now and it is just now clicking....it is amazing what a few moments of reflection can afford.

A family pic.....Phyllis. Moriah, Brian and Gunner.

Moriah is ready to walk with me to take Gunner to school!

Gunner is dressed and ready for school too!

We attempted making cinnamon rolls this week...just because...

....As you can see, they were a success!
